Must be the Menehune

As we start to move into Hawaii’s busy winter- spring season, I like to share with my readers one of the cool things that make Hawaii travel different than many other popular vacation destinations.

Hawaii is a very spiritual destination. In addition to being the most lush of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai may be the most spiritual of the Hawaiian islands. One of the great myths and legends of Kauai is the legend of the Menehune.

In Hawaiian mythology, the Menehune are said to be a people, sometimes described as dwarfs in size, who live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of Hawaii, far from the eyes of normal humans.The Menehune were said to be superb craftspeople. Legends say that the Menehune built temples fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. They are said to have lived in Hawaii before the human settlers arrived many centuries ago. When something unexplainable happens in Kauai, one of the local slogans is,”Must be the Menehune!”
Kauai is blessed with panoramic vistas so beautiful they defy description. The island is home to two of the world’s natural wonders- Na Pali Coast and the Waimea Canyon.
