Left hand drive is standard. The driver and front seat passengers must wear seat belts. It’s the law.
Avoid Honolulu’s weekday rush hours. 7 to 830am and 330 to 6 pm. An open container in a vehicle is against the law. Don’t forget to lock your car.

Hawaii Dress

Clothingwise; almost anything goes in Hawaii, especially if its comfortable. “Aloha wear”- a colorful patterned short sleeve shirt for men and a long muumuu for women- is always in fashion.

A long running and popular clothing trend has been the decorated tee shirt. Cool and convenient sandals or rubber slippers are acceptable where your tee shirt will go. You are expected to leave your footwear at the door of most Hawaiian homes, so be prepared.

Hawaii Diving

Just beyond the water’s edge is a riot of color- corals, waving sea grass, tentacled and many legged creatures and multi color fish.

Snorkeling and diving offer a peek into this silent, colorful and very busy world. Visit the Waikiki Aquarium before you head for the beach.

Never scuba without a knowledgeable buddy. Tour companies can recommend experienced professional diver-escorts if you are alone or a beginning diver. Most dive shops offer half and full day snorkeling and scuba tours- usually in small groups. They provide equipment and transportation from your hotel, as well as rental underwater cameras and masks with corrective lenses.

On the Big Island, Kahaluu Beach Park, just south of Kailua-Kona is good for beginning snorkelers. Continue to Kealakekua Bay for action. You may do a lot of swimming unless your rent a boat.

Molokini Islet, off the southern beach of Maui is for experienced diver. Near Lahaina, Honolua Bay is very popular.

Hanauma Bay, on the outskirts of Honolulu is a busy State marine conservation area.

The island of Kauai also offers good snorkeling and diving. Ahukini Landing near Lihu and Kee Lagoon outside Princeville. Old Koloa Landing on the Poipu side of the island is also a hot spot.

HAWAII BEACHES

The first thing many Hawaii travelers when their thoughts turn to Hawaii, are the great Hawaii Beaches. Hawaii’s great beaches offer swimming, camping, body surfing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and just plain sun worshipping. Water temperatures range between 75 degrees and 80 degrees all year round.

But even the most inviting beaches in Paradise demand respect-especially during winter. Some, like Oahu’s North Shore, are not protected by offshore reefs. Heavy unobstructed surf can not only knock down the unwary, but also pull one out to sea.

The Big Islands’s Kahaluu Beach Park, just south of Kailua- Kona is great for kids and beginning snorkelers. So is Hapuna Beach on the South Kohala Coast.

Kihei and Wailea on Maui’s south shore are famous for their sun and sea, as are Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Flemings Beach. Hookipa Beach Park, just outside Kahului does not have much of a beach but is a windsurfer heaven.

On Kauai, Poipu Beach on the south side is a favorite. Don’t miss Lumahai Beach on the north shore, where South Pacific was filmed.

On Lanai, don’t miss Hulopoe Bay. On Molokai, Papohaku and Kawakiu Beaches.

On Oahu, try Ala Moana Beach Park or world famous Waikiki Beach. Further out from Honolulu consider Kailua, Lanikai and Waimanolo Beach Parks

UPDATE ON HAWAII EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS

♦ Discover the source of the dishes served at Pacific‘O and I‘O restaurants at
O‘o Farm on Maui. While the 8.5-acre farm has been providing local fruits and
vegetables to the contemporary pacific eateries since 2004, they recently began
offering gourmet lunch tours to guests interested in learning more about where
their meal comes from.

♦ Join the Pacific Whale Foundation in Maui for a monthlong celebration
honoring Hawai‘i’s beloved visitors, the humpback whales. The Maui Whale
Festival celebrates its 30th Anniversary this coming February with lots of classes,
activities, and guided whale watching tours for the entire family. Some of the
notable events include the Whale Photo Safari on the 13th, A Laugh At the Park,
a dinner and comedy show fundraiser featuring Augie T. on the 19th, and Maui’s
Whale Day Celebration, the signature event on the 20th.

♦ KapohoKine Adventures and Flyin Hawaiian Zipline Tours are the latest
adventure tour operators to add zipline courses in Hawai‘i. KapohoKine’s new

Umauma Falls Zipline is the longest and only side-by-side dual track on
Hawai‘i’s Big Island. Guests will soar above the roaring rapids and waterfalls of
the Kohala region at heights up to 160 feet. On Maui, the Flyin Hawaiian Zipline
adventure begins at Maui Tropical Plantation and crosses over two and one third
miles of the West Maui Mountains.

♦ Ocean Sports has opened a fifth location in Kawaihae on Hawai‘i’s Big Island to
offer more tours during the upcoming Humpback whale season. The cruise
offers various whale-themed activities for the entire family prior to embarking
on the whale watching excursion including interactive displays, photo galleries,
arts and crafts, whale songs, and Whale of Fortune.

♦ The Sugar Cane Train, which travels between historic Lahaina town and the
Kä‘anapali resort area on Maui, is now offering a new dinner cruise on Thursday
evenings departing at 5 p.m. from the Pu‘ukoli‘i station. The cruise features a
Hawaiian buffet with sautéed ono and teriyaki marinated chicken and
entertainment by Na Pua O Kapiolani Hula Studio.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS
♦ The Sheraton Waikiki’s new Helumoa Playground, a “super pool” containing
fresh water swimming pools, whirlpools, cabanas, and a 15-foot high water slide,
has balanced its thrill factor with the opening of The Infinity Edge Pool.
Adults can now relax in this exclusive section of the playground while taking in
the stunning views of Waikïkï Beach on O‘ahu, sipping on a refreshing cocktail
from the new full-service bar The Edge of Waikiki, and soaking up the

♦ The Mission Houses Museum’s new blog ThaddeusJournal.org provides insight
into the journey of Protestant missionaries who traveled on the Brig Thaddeus to
the Sandwich Islands now known as Hawai‘i in October 1819. The museum posts
daily excerpts from a journal kept by the travelers during the six-month trek.
The blog entries are a prelude to a new exhibit opening in January 2010 called
“Coming to Hawai‘i: A Trunk Show.”

♦ Longtime island restaurateur T.S. Restaurants expects to open a new eatery,
Duke’s Beach House, by December at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa on Maui.
Every aspect of the new restaurant will be Hawai‘i-inspired from the menu,
featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the open air structure
overlooking North Beach to the collection of memorabilia from the legendary
waterman Duke Kahanamoku.

Guests at Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Ho‘omaluhia can now take
advantage of the new infinity pool overlooking the serene valley below. Set in a
secluded location on the North Kohala coast of Hawai‘i’s Big Island and

Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau for over 15 years, and enjoy sharing my passion for Hawaii travel with my clients.

The states capital, Honolulu is on Oahu, this is the center of Hawaii’s economy and by far the most populated island in the chain – 900000 residents add up to 71% of the state’s population. WHAT’S NEW IN THE ISLANDS OF ALOHA

♦ Google Street View is now offering real-life images of various locations and
streets on O‘ahu and Maui. Web users have the ability to move from a satellite
view of a spot on Earth to a street view with one click. The Hawai‘i Visitors and
Convention Bureau also collaborated with Google to create collections within
the Street View galleries featuring Hawai‘i’s best beaches and President Obama’s
hometown favorites.

♦ Aqua Hotels and Resorts recently expanded its inventory to 17 properties
statewide with the addition of the Maile Sky Court Hotel on O‘ahu, formerly
managed by Castle Hotels and Resorts. The 44-story hotel offers 596 rooms with
commanding views of the Pacific Ocean and Waikïkï. For more information,

♦ Maui’s Grand Wailea, The Waldorf Astoria Collection is hoping to build a new,
interactive cultural center and gardens on the resort grounds to share the
Hawaiian culture with its guests. In an effort to educate visitors about the
cultural significance behind the destination, Grand Wailea will work with cultural
experts to develop a curriculum focusing on the native culture, local marine
biology, and the environment. Some programs will be conducted in the gardens,
which features native and indigenous plants such as the lo‘i kalo (taro patch),
considered an important staple to ancient Hawaiians. A hula mound and natural
amphitheater for instruction and special events are additional features

♦ Cirque Polynesia at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa has relocated to a
new outdoor venue named the Maui Moon Theatre. The move brings the
show’s entertainment value to new heights as guests can enjoy an evening under

♦ Several Hawai‘i hotels are now offering guests a grocery delivery service to
make their Hawai‘i vacation more enjoyable. Outrigger Maui Eldorado is one
hotel looking to eliminate the hassle of shopping for its visitors by partnering
with Demming’s Delivery Service, a local grocery delivery service on Maui.
With Demming’s, visitors can order online or by phone and can even choose
from a selection of island delicacies made by specialty vendors. Aston Hotels and
Resorts also teamed up with Island Grocery Service to provide the service for
guests staying at the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower, Aston Waikiki Sunset, Aston
at the Waikiki Banyan, Aston Pacific Monarch, and Aston at the Executive
Centre Hotel. Prior to arrival, Aston guests can order food, household, and
personal items online to be stocked in their room kitchens.

EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS
♦ Premium extreme sports retailer, Volcom, has partnered with the Association of
Surfing Professionals (ASP) Hawaii to host its first ever ASP-sanctioned
professional surfing event next year at the notorious Pipeline surf break on
O‘ahu’s North Shore. The Volcom Pipeline Pro will kick off the 2010 professional
surfing season with competition occurring on the best three surfing days from
January 23 to February 5. The first place winner will take home a purse of
$16,000 and earn valuable ratings to help qualify for the World Tour. For more

♦ Kona Brewing Company recently opened a trendy new spot for entertainment
at its Koko Marina pub on O‘ahu’s east side. The Liquid Aloha Lounge offers
refreshing one-of-a-kind drink specials including beer-tinis along with classic
cocktails like Mai Tais and Blue Hawaiis that usually come to mind when
vacationing in Hawai‘i. Kona Brewing Co.’s original beer-tinis are a concoction of
the brewery’s award-winning beers and various liqueurs. The Strawberry
Longboard is a house favorite featuring Longboard Island Lager fused with Stoli

TRANSPORTATION UPDATES
♦ Delta Air Lines is the latest carrier to add California flights to Hawai‘i.
Beginning on June 3, 2010, Delta will provide daily nonstop service between
San Diego and Honolulu, O‘ahu. In March, a second daily flight from Los
Angeles to Kahului, Maui will commence. Tickets for the new Hawai‘i routes
are available now for purchase.

♦ American Automobile Association’s (AAA) list of Four Diamond
establishments was recently released, and Hawai‘i’s hotels and restaurants fared
well. A total of 16 hotels and 12 restaurants from Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, Läna‘i,
and Hawai‘i’s Big Island received the prestigious ratings, most of which
repeated the honor for another consecutive year.

♦ For the second continuous year, the Hawai‘i Convention Center has won the
2010 Best in Business Travel award for Best Conference or Convention Center
from Business Traveller magazine. Business travelers worldwide were given the
opportunity to submit nominations in various categories in the second annual
poll.

Hawaiian Escape

As a certified Hawaii destination specialist and provider of luxury Hawaii vacations for over 15 years I wanted to share a few thoughts on types of Hawaii accomodations.
We usually offer 3 types of accommodations for our Hawaii travelers. A Hawaii hotel usually has daily maid service, on site restaurant and laundry facility. It will almost always have a pool and convenience shop. The hotels in Hawaii are usually a short walk from the beach rather then beachfront.


A Hawaii resort has all a hotel has, and more. You can expect direct beach access. There will probably be a spa and fitness center, restaurants, bars and lounges. 24 hour front desk and activities desk. Resorts usually price more, but have more amenities and services. Just because a hotel has resort in its name does not necessarily mean that it is a true resort. A good travel agent will able to pick out the right hotel for you, so you make the most of your hard earned vacation time.


The other popular Hawaii accommodation is a condo property.Condominiums in Hawaii vary greatly. Families find condos a great value, since many are larger units and include cooking facilities. If you are staying a long stay, always consider a condo. Again, a good travel agent will know which are the best condos to stay in, and which are best to avoid.

Anytime! Hawaii is a great destination with warm and balmy weather most of the year. Rainfall varies with the location more than the season. The western and southern regions of the islands, the leeward side, have the driest and sunniest conditions with the calmest waters. The rainy season is from November to April. You will find stormy weather at times during the winter, but much of the rain consists of short daytime showers followed by rainbows. Hawaii has several peak travel seasons, January - March, June - August, the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. The highest prices and greatest travel demand are found during these peak travel seasons.

The Ritz Carlton Kapalua just completed a $95 million restoration. This wonderful hotel has 446 guestrooms, one and two bedroom suites and club level rooms with flat screen TV, marble bathrooms and lanai. This hotel is a true golfer paradise with two championship golf courses.

The Grand Wailea Resort is a lavish resort with renowned spa, great beach. All guestrooms are 640 square foot with private lanai, marble bathroom and oversize bathrub. Don’t miss the water elevator at the huge water park.

BUNGALOWS AT MAUNA LANI BAY

The Bungalows at Mauna Lani Bay are fully staffed private bungalows on the Kohala Coast. They are nestled on 29 oceanfront acres next to the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. Each bungalow has 4000 square feet of living space, dining area, private pool, kitchen and large lanai. Guests of the bungalows are met at the airport by a private butler and escorted to the resort by limousine.

Wailea the South Shore of Maui’s resort community is slightly quieter and drier than its west side sister Kaanapali. The first two resorts were built here in the late 1970’s. Flum'in Da Ditch
Trained guides lead you on a unique ecotourism journey. The excursion travels over privately owned land to the inaccessible and historic Kohala Sugar plantation irrigation system. The cruise meanders over 3.5 miles of the system, traveling through pristine rain forests, over ravines, waterfalls and through tunnels. The guides share their knowledge of the Kohala region. Must be the Menehune

As we start to move into Hawaii’s busy winter- spring season, I like to share with my readers one of the cool things that make Hawaii travel different than many other popular vacation destinations.

Hawaii is a very spiritual destination. In addition to being the most lush of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai may be the most spiritual of the Hawaiian islands. One of the great myths and legends of Kauai is the legend of the Menehune.

In Hawaiian mythology, the Menehune are said to be a people, sometimes described as dwarfs in size, who live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of Hawaii, far from the eyes of normal humans.The Menehune were said to be superb craftspeople. Legends say that the Menehune built temples fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. They are said to have lived in Hawaii before the human settlers arrived many centuries ago. When something unexplainable happens in Kauai, one of the local slogans is,”Must be the Menehune!”
Kauai is blessed with panoramic vistas so beautiful they defy description. The island is home to two of the world’s natural wonders- Na Pali Coast and the Waimea Canyon. Whether you are looking for an exciting outdoor adventure, such as sea kayaking, ziplining over tropical valleys, or a serious escape from the modern world in a hammock on a coconut fringed beach- Kauai is your place.
