Just beyond the water’s edge is a riot of color- corals, waving sea grass, tentacled and many legged creatures and multi color fish.

Snorkeling and diving offer a peek into this silent, colorful and very busy world. Visit the Waikiki Aquarium before you head for the beach.

Never scuba without a knowledgeable buddy. Tour companies can recommend experienced professional diver-escorts if you are alone or a beginning diver. Most dive shops offer half and full day snorkeling and scuba tours- usually in small groups. They provide equipment and transportation from your hotel, as well as rental underwater cameras and masks with corrective lenses.

On the Big Island, Kahaluu Beach Park, just south of Kailua-Kona is good for beginning snorkelers. Continue to Kealakekua Bay for action. You may do a lot of swimming unless your rent a boat.

Molokini Islet, off the southern beach of Maui is for experienced diver. Near Lahaina, Honolua Bay is very popular.

Hanauma Bay, on the outskirts of Honolulu is a busy State marine conservation area.

The island of Kauai also offers good snorkeling and diving. Ahukini Landing near Lihu and Kee Lagoon outside Princeville. Old Koloa Landing on the Poipu side of the island is also a hot spot.
